During 2009 – 2014, I held the role of Head of Safer Communities for the London Borough of Hackney, where I worked with Pauline who was a senior lawyer, dealing with all aspects of Anti-Social Behaviour. Pauline’s passion for her work was commendable and we struck up an excellent working relationship. A relationship that continued after I left Hackney, to enter the Metropolitan Police as a Superintendent for Lambeth, Southwark, and Greenwich Roads and Transport Policing Command. During this time, I reached out to Pauline, who attended Greenwich Council and provided a training session on Protocols for dealing with Unauthorised Encampments to ensure fair and reasonable practices were in place. On leaving the Police, I had the pleasure of reading Rice & Peas and Fish & Chips that I found riveting.Pauline and I discussed the book at length and her knowledge of historical and political issues regarding the police and the Black communities was impressive, as well as providing honest and personal accounts of her journey. I am of the opinion every police officer should read this book.
